General Study
This text book is considered the basic text for studying for the Certification examination. You will need to suplement this text with other books on the business of photography and books that deal with specializations.
Basic Photographic Materials and Processes, Third edition, by Nanette L. Salvaggio, Leslie Stroebel and Richard Zakia. This classic guide to the technical side of photography has been updated to include new digital information.
Light and Lighting and Portraiture
Tony Corbell, Lighting. Tony's book is a great choice for beginning photographers. It is well illustrated and easy to read.
Don Blair, Portraiture, is a classic for portrait photographers. Published by Kodak, this is an excellent book in any photographer's library. Now out of print, if you find a copy, get it.
John Child, Studio Photography, Essential Skills, 4th ed. This is a solid technical book for studio lighting. It covers the basics for portrait and commercial photography. It is written from a British perspective.
Monte Zucker's Portrait Photography Handbook
Digital Photography
Mark Galer and Philip Andrews, Photoshop CS4: Essential Skills. This guide, in its various editions, is Amazon's best selling project guide to Photoshop.
Scott Kelby, Adobe Photoshop CS4 Book for Digital Photographers. This is one of my favorite digital books. If you are buying one Photoshop book, this should be it.
Adobe Photoshop CS4 Classroom in a Book. Learn the basics of Photoshop from the Adobe team.
Pantone Guide to Communicating with Color, Leatrice Eiseman.

Doeffinger, D. The Art of Seeing. Kodak Workshop Series.This book is out of print, but you can still get used copies and occassionaly Amazon will have a new copy. This is one of the best buys. Get it for your library!
Michael Freeman. The Photographer's Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos.
